Healthcare institutions are moving to integrate health data sources
using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems delivered over wireless
networks. Such applications allow disparate electronic patient
information to be input by different caregivers at different locations
and to be stored as encapsulated patient profiles. Our mobile medical
system allows doctors to efficiently record and access complete and
accurate real-time patient data at the point-of-care. The system fuses
important multimedia patient data such as medical imagery with textual
patient profiles. It also combines expert interactions by caregivers
with patient cases using Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) and Knowledge
Management (KM) techniques. By capturing specialist decision-making
the application can provide decision support that assists caregivers
in quickly retrieving the most similar patient cases from large
repositories of medical records to support effective diagnoses by
comparing symptoms, treatments, diagnoses and other patient
information. In this paper we present an overview of a case-based
multimedia medical decision support application and an evaluation with
actual electronic patient medical records.
