Agenda Intrusion Detection: A 20 Year Practice Dr. Peng Liu, University of Maryland at Baltimore County. Intrusion detection is a widely recognized critical technology for computer and network security, after a 20 year R&D practice. Many commercial intrusion detection systems have been deployed. In this presentation, we will (1) give an introductory overview of intrusion detection systems; (2) review the history of intrusion detection; (3) survey existing intrusion detection methodologies; (4) survey current commercial intrusion detection systems; and(5) identify some promising research directions in intrusion detection. Authentication: From Password to Biometrics Dr. Gail Joon Ahn, University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Authentication, the process to verify the identity of a user or an agent, is the most essential of all the security services because reliable authentication is needed to enforce access control, accountability, and to achieve non-repudiation. Many methods are used to provide authentication. In this presentation, we will give an overview of authentication mechanisms; review emerging biometric technologies and applications including benefits of using biometrics for authentication; give a brief comparison between different biometric technologies; and discuss current issues in biometrics based authentication, both within the Government and industry, such as E-sign, BioAPI, Simplifying Passenger Travel (SPT) and Assurance.
