Authentication, the process to verify the identity of a user or an agent, is the most essential of all the security services because reliable authentication is needed to enforce access control, accountability, and to achieve non-repudiation. Many methods are used to provide authentication. In this presentation, we will give an overview of authentication mechanisms; review emerging biometric technologies and applications including benefits of using biometrics for authentication; give a brief comparison between different biometric technologies; and discuss current issues in biometrics based authentication, both within the Government and industry, such as E-sign, BioAPI, Simplifying Passenger Travel (SPT) and Assurance.
